The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) currently has a vacancy for an unclassified Attorney in the Topeka Office. The KCC, is a multi-faceted agency responsible for regulating public utilities including electric, natural gas, telecommunication, as well as motor carriers, oil and gas pipelines and oil and gas production activities. The Commission’s headquarters is in Topeka with the central Conservation office in Wichita and four Conservation district offices located in Dodge City, Wichita, Chanute and Hays.

Position Summary & Responsibilities


Position Summary:

  • Representing and advising the Commission’s technical staff on all matters relating to the jurisdictional regulation of public utilities and motor carriers. Work includes evaluating issues and facilitating formulation of technical staff positions; coordinating preparation of testimony; preparing pleadings, motions, briefs and orders; reviewing evidence and discovery; providing client representation in hearings and pre-hearing conferences including, as necessary, making oral arguments, and examining and cross-examining witnesses.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • In addition to maintaining a full docket load, duties may also include providing legal advice and assistance to the Commission and/or its representatives concerning procedures, rules, regulations, legislative initiatives, and operations of the Commission, including drafting or reviewing and commenting on memoranda, opinions, contracts, and other documents.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensing & Certification:
  • Licensed to practice law in Kansas and in good standing with the Supreme Court of Kansas at the time of appointment.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate from a law school and license to practice law in Kansas. At least six (6) years of experience in professional legal work is preferred, including experience in litigation, government or administrative law settings. An undergraduate degree in business or engineering, and experience in regulation and energy law is preferred. Excellent communication and writing skills are essential. Candidates must be qualified for admission to practice before the US District Court for the District of Kansas.
